Travel vs. Vacation: What’s the Difference?

I try not to mix up the terms vacation and travel. When it gets right down to it these words, often used interchangeably, mean very different things.

People often talk about traveling in Mexico while sipping their margarita on the private beach owned by their all-expense-paid resort. This isn’t travel. It’s vacation. There is a very important and distinct difference.

Vacation and travel are different but both great, please don’t take this as a declaration that one is better than the other.

What is Vacation?

To me a vacation is going somewhere with the intention of skiing, surfing, theme parks, or lying on the beach. They’re week long getaways to all-inclusive destination with a focus on relaxation and fun.

That’s really the key. Relaxation. A vacation is an opportunity to go somewhere new (or somewhere else familiar) and lazy about, drink some fruity drinks. It’s an opportunity to get away from the day-to-day stresses of life and enjoy some free time. But I don’t learn on vacation. It doesn’t make me a better person, expand my horizons, or help me develop new ideas. To me vacation should be easy.

This doesn’t, of course, mean vacations are in any way a bad thing. I love vacationing. Theme parks and beaches are among my favorite destinations, but I do recognize these activities for what they are. Resorts, cruises, and house rentals are usually vacation.

You can Instagram it, smack a filter on it, but that doesn’t make it travel.

What is travel?

What is travel? Other than the act of transit?

Travel isn’t usually easy. Travel is discovering cultures, expanding horizons, staying in crappy hostels and backpacking. It’s challenge. It’s work. This is the kind of adventure that leaves you with a lasting sense of awe. For the most part it isn’t relaxing.

People travel to experience a different way of living. To try (and see) new things. The hurdles you jump while traveling can have a serious impact on how you perceive and understand the world. People often talk about the very personal benefits they get from travel, beyond simply the experiences. It opens your eyes, you learn who you are, it will help you discover new skills, and gives you perspective.

If you’re going to a new place to discover how they see the world, you can probably safely describe it as travel.

The Hybrid

To be fair, you can definitely vacation while you travel. When I was younger my family and I went on a three week trip to Europe. I can safely define two of the three weeks travel (museums, historic locations, trying new foods) but we spent the last week in a rented house on an island in Greece. During this time we went on a day-cruise, spent time snorkeling and on the beach, and relaxed. This is 100% vacation. It didn’t teach me anything or make me a more cultured person, but man was it relaxing and memorable.

In fact, for a great trip I would recommend taking a vacation from your travel. I know that sounds weird but if you think about it, it does make sense. If you’re spending three months on the road plan for at least a day or two a month to relax. Whether it’s on a beach, in the hostel, in a park, or wherever you find relaxation. Trust me, after too many days of no sleep you’re going to need a break.
Travel is Great, So is Vacation

So What’s the Difference?

No country is a “vacation-spot” or “travel-spot.” You can vacation or travel in any country, and in any city. For example: A vacation in Mexico would be staying in an all-inclusive resort in Cancun. Travel in Mexico would be staying in Mexico City and exploring the streets, meeting locals, and probably getting lost.

Some trips have elements of travel and elements of vacation. But in the end your trip is what you make of it. You can vacay or travel and nobody is judging you, but you have to know in advance what you want out of your trip. Similarly, your wanderlust may not be for old churches and getting to know a culture. It may be for beaches or parties. To each their own.

How to Plan a Budget Myrtle Beach Vacation for Your Family

Myrtle Beach is one of the more popular vacation destinations for families, and for good reason. Myrtle Beach offers activities to entertain everyone from small children to adults. Not only is it a fun place to visit, but Myrtle Beach is a great place to spend your vacation when you are on a tight budget. There are many things to do in Myrtle Beach for free or that cost very little.
Ways to Save Money on Your Myrtle Beach Vacation

Planning ahead is the key to visiting Myrtle Beach on a budget. The easiest way to save money on your Myrtle Beach vacation is to go during the off-season. The prices for hotels and attractions drop dramatically after September and stay low through about April. If you can plan your vacation at a time other than the peak of summer, you can save up to half off your Myrtle Beach vacation.

Even if you want to visit Myrtle Beach during the summer, there are several ways you can save money. Your vacation expenses will fall into five categories: travel, lodging, meals, activities, and supplies. Let’s look at how you can cut costs in each area in order to keep your Myrtle Beach vacation within your budget.
Cutting Travel Costs

Unless you live close to the Myrtle Beach area, you need to include your travel costs in your vacation budget. If at all possible, drive to Myrtle Beach instead of fly. Even with the cost of gas, driving will usually be less expensive. You will also not have to worry about renting a car once you get there.

If you must fly, you can get the best airfare rates if you buy your tickets as far in advance as possible. Airlines will release tickets at discount prices several months in advance, and once those tickets are gone, they are gone. Also, be flexible about the time and day you are flying. You can often get the lowest price by choosing a flight that leaves during the middle of the week or at night. You may also be able to find a better deal on your airfare to Myrtle Beach by looking for flights that have several connections or long layovers.
Cheap Lodging in Myrtle Beach
Book a Hotel Further From the Beach

Your accommodations while you are in Myrtle Beach can easily be your biggest expense. Hotels close to the beach are notoriously expensive. If you don’t mind driving for 10-15 minutes, you can find a hotel in the Conway area for much less money.

If you want to be closer to the beach, look for hotels or rentals in the North Myrtle Beach area, Surfside or Murrell’s Inlet. These areas are 15-20 minutes away from downtown Myrtle Beach, so you can often find a better deal on a hotel.

You don’t have to worry about being too far from the action either; You are just as close to the beach as you would be in the main Myrtle Beach area and several of the local attractions are located in Surfside or North Myrtle Beach.
Compare Hotel Prices with Online Travel Sites

If you want to be closer to the downtown Myrtle Beach area, use sites like Travelocity or Priceline to compare hotel prices and find the least expensive one that has the amenities you are looking for.

If you are not particular about which hotel you stay at, the name your own price feature on Priceline is a good way to get a much lower price for your hotel room. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to choose the location, amenities or even the room size if you use this feature.

Speaking of amenities, don’t pay for ones that you don’t need. If all you really need is a bed and shower, you don’t need to pay extra for that expensive all inclusive resort.
Rent a House or Condo in Myrtle Beach

You can also try looking for a condo, apartment or house to rent. These accommodations usually rent by the week and have one or more separate bedrooms and a full kitchen. Contrary to what you may think, renting a condo or house in Myrtle Beach is usually not much more expensive than staying in a beachfront hotel.

You can save even more money by sharing the condo with another family and splitting the cost. You may even get lucky and find a condo or house owned by an individual person who is willing to accept a lower price just to get it rented for the week. Look on websites like to find vacation rentals owned by individuals.
Camping at Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach also has several campgrounds for nature enthusiasts, so bring your tent or RV and camp out. Some campsites even offer trailers to rent on-site if you don’t have your own RV.

Just because you are camping, doesn’t mean you can’t live it up. You can find campgrounds that offer everything from just the basic camping essentials to resort campgrounds that offer their own on-site water park, daily activities and entertainment. Many of these campgrounds are located along the beach, so you can have the same easy access to the beach that you would in a beachfront hotel at a fraction of the price.
Free or Low-Cost Activities in Myrtle Beach

Paying for expensive attractions can really make a dent in your wallet, especially if you have a large family. Fortunately, Myrtle Beach offer many free and low-cost activities for families traveling on a budget.

Play on the Beach

Not only is the beach the biggest attraction Myrtle Beach has to offer, it is also free. Your family can easily spend all day playing in the sand, riding the waves on a body board, hunting for shells or flying kites.

Although the beach is free, you may have to pay for parking. There are several places along Ocean Boulevard that offer free parking to the public, but these tend to fill up quickly, so get there early if you want to grab one. Look for the posted free parking signs and make sure you don’t accidentally park in a private lot or you could be towed. If you can’t find any free parking, you can either park at a meter for short trips, or pay a daily rate at one of the pay-to-park lots.
Visit Broadway at the Beach

When you want a break from the sun and sand, you can spend some time walking around Broadway at the Beach. Although Broadway at the Beach does offer many shops and paid attractions, there is enough to see and do that you can have fun without spending much money.

You can spend some time playing in the water at the spray ground while watching a 30-foot dragon breathe fire from the top of the Dragon’s Lair Fantasy Golf castle. You can also visit the playground, watch one of the street performers or, for a few coins, get some food to feed the ducks and fish.

MagiQuest has a garden quest that you can enjoy free of charge. Even if you don’t have a wand, you can follow the clues and find the figures hidden around Broadway at the Beach. Every Tuesday night, you can also watch a free fireworks show with a special appearance by the fire breathing dragon.
Murell’s Inlet Marsh Walk

Visit Murell’s Inlet to see a different side of the ocean. The Marsh Walk is a free boardwalk trail that takes you out over the marshland so you can get a closer look at all of the plants and animals that make the marsh their home.
Myrtle Beach Festivals

Myrtle Beach hosts several festivals throughout the year with free admission. You can enjoy open air concerts, street performers, demonstrations and exhibits followed by fireworks in the evening. Some festivals also offer a play area with inflatables for the kids.
Market Commons Grand Park

If you just want to take a break from the crowds and excitement, head over to Grand Park across from Market Commons. This park offers a playground, a lake, picnic shelters and a walking trail with several free digital game consoles big enough for your whole family to play in at once. After playing at the park, you can head down the road to Warbird Park and see some fighter planes up close.

Saving Money on Myrtle Beach Attractions

Although many of the most popular tourist attractions in Myrtle Beach are expensive, you can still fit them into your vacation budget. Have your family pick one or two of the more expensive attractions and fill in the rest of the time with free or very low cost activities.

You can save money on some of the attractions that charge for a day pass by going in the afternoon. For example, the regular daily rate for Myrtle Waves is $32.99, but if you go after 3:00, the price drops to $24.99.

Many of these attractions also offer coupons or discounts if you buy tickets to more than one attraction at the same time or buy the tickets online. Check the website of each attraction for combo deals or pick up one of the many free coupon and guide books available around Myrtle Beach. You can also look through some of the online coupon books listed in this article to find great deals on Myrtle Beach attractions.
Supplies and Souvenirs

You need to have some basic supplies with when you go to Myrtle Beach, both for fun and for safety. In general, coolers, sunscreen, beach shoes, cover-ups, swim goggles and bathing suits will be less expensive if you buy them at home and bring them with you.

However, you can often find basic beach umbrellas, towels and other beach supplies for just a few dollars by buying them from one of the many beach supply stores in Myrtle Beach. The stores use these items as loss leaders to get you into the store hoping that you will either upgrade or buy other things at regular price. If you can resist the urge to buy anything extra, you can save a ton of money.

Look through some of the online coupon books listed on this page to see what the current deals are so you know what you should buy before you leave and what you should buy at Myrtle Beach.

Also, only buy what you need. This may sound obvious, but once you see all of the many unique and just plain wacky things available in the beach supply stores, it can be hard to resist spending some extra money. Before you buy anything, however, ask yourself if you will actually use it once you get back home or if it will just be another piece of junk you throw in a drawer and forget about.
Reducing the Cost of Meals

Eating out is a fun part of any vacation, but you can save money by going to a restaurant for only one or two special meals and making the rest yourself. Stay at a hotel or condo that has a kitchen, and stock up on some basic foods like cereal, pancake mix, eggs, milk, bread, lunchmeat, cheese, jelly and peanut butter to use for breakfast and lunch. You can make dinner special, even if you are cooking it yourself, by trying new foods or cooking some of those favorite family meals that you don’t have very often.

Plan out the meals for your Myrtle Beach vacation ahead of time, and make sure you have all the ingredients on hand and ready to use. After a long day of fun, both you and your kids will be tired and hungry. The last thing you will want to do is worry about what you are going to eat. If you have some simple meals already planned and ready to put together, you are less likely to eat out on the days that you just don’t feel like cooking.

Prepare your lunches ahead of time when you plan on being out all day so you don’t need to worry about returning to the hotel. Pack everything in a cooler and eat out of your car or have a picnic at the park or on the beach. This goes for snacks and drinks as well. Bring everything you will need to eat for the day with you so you don’t have spend money on expensive food and drinks at the concession stands.
Stick to Your Budget and Have Fun

Remember, a vacation is all about spending time relaxing and having fun with your family, not about how much money you spend. Decide what your budget is before you leave and stick with it. Plan out your activities ahead of time and do some research to find the best deals for your family. With many low cost things to do in Myrtle Beach, you should be able to plan a fantastic and memorable vacation for your family that does not break the bank.

Things To Do In Florida: Great FL Vacation Ideas For Your Next Trip!

Every year, millions of visitors to Florida plan to visit the great beaches. Although those beaches are certainly beautiful, they are hardly all there is to see in Florida. Although Florida is known as the “Sunshine State”, beaches are only the tip of what Florida has to offer…literally. If you’re going to experience Florida, come and see all it has to offer.

This state has everything from wooded natural parks, springs, Civil War battlegrounds, and of course, Florida is home to the original large theme park, Disney World. Many of Florida’s cities have historical, cultural, sports, and other attractions to make your vacation an adventure on many levels. From one of the oldest cities in North America, St. Augustine, to a “city of the future” at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center, Florida has every type of attraction you could want. If you are going on a Florida vacation soon, you should include some time in your trip for some of the other great vacation places in Florida. The natural and cultural attractions listed below will can be found within short drives from most of Florida’s tourism hubs.
Rivers And Creeks And Streams, Oh My!!

If your Florida vacation only includes salt water, you are missing out! Florida has many rivers that can add some beauty and local flavor to your trip. Some of these places offer swimming and fishing, and others are great for tubing or canoeing! These are great spots for both family vacations, fishing, camping and personal getaways, and due to their location are generally cheaper than a vacation at the coast.

There are many beaches to visit across the U.S., and a few are comparable to Florida beaches, but none of them are so close to other natural views and trips as the ones in Florida.

Most of Florida’s rivers are only short drives from great beach areas. If you are visiting the sand of the Pensacola area beaches, the Escambia River and Blackwater State Park are wonderful areas to see. If Tampa is where you are headed, the Hillsborough River has great canoeing for both newcomers and the experienced or even the Homosassa Springs State Park where you can see Manatees and many other forms of Florida wildlife. And if Daytona is your destination, try visiting Blue Springs, Wekiwa Springs or DeLeon Springs for excellent swimming, kayaking, and more!

Some other river stops in North Florida include the Wakulla and St. Marks Rivers. At Wakulla Springs you can swim in the spring or even take a boat tour down the river to see all of the great wildlife surrounding the area. And a stop at the historic St. Marks Lighthouse is a must for any Forgotten Coast visits.

Also fresh water, Lake Okeechobee, Florida’s largest lake, is a great vacation spot and has some of the best fishing in the South. All of these stops offer a further look into the culture and life of Floridians.
Floridas Beautiful State Parks

Florida has some of the most beautiful state parks in the USA. They offer camping, cabins, fishing, and more and are spread out all over the beautiful state. These parks are easy to add to the vacation you are planning because no matter where you are headed in the Sunshine State, a Florida State Park is near you! Florida State Parks are an inexpensive way to see every vacation area of Florida.

For a great underwater experience, visit the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. It is the first underwater state park in America and offers snorkeling, scuba diving, glass bottom boats, fishing, and more! For an extended stay, you can enjoy their great camping facilities. With over 70 nautical square miles, great beaches, and a 30,000 gallon aquarium, there is fun for all. It is also a great place from which to visit some of the other tourist areas of the Florida Keys that are just a short trip away.

Perhaps you would like to see something other than beach while on your Florida vacation? If so, I would recommend the Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna, FL. You can view the only Florida state park to offer cave tours to the public. This park offers camping, fishing, hiking and even has stables if you would like to bring your horse for some trail riding. There is also a 9 hole golf course there so you can catch a short round while the family plays in the swimming area. Florida Caverns State Park (seen to the right) is a very short distance from the Chipola River which offers some of the best tubing in the state. On any given day in the summer you will see hundreds of kids and adults floating down the cool river.

For some history mixed with beautiful views, visit the Fort Clinch State Park near Jacksonville, FL. This park offers beaches, hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, and tours of one of Florida’s oldest forts located in one of the most beautiful locations. Fort Clinch is also near some of Northeast Florida’s best beaches along with Jacksonville for shopping, zoos, museums and more. There are multiple nearby camping areas, plenty of fishing on the St. Johns River and off shore from Jacksonville Beach.
Other Great Florida Spots

A few other Florida vacation spots worth mentioning have little to do with beaches and fishing, although they are close to the beaches. They would be an excellent addition for anyone planning a personal or family vacation.

Florida’s oldest city, St. Augustine, is a great destination for any Florida vacation. This beautiful place offers horse-drawn carriage rides, historic tours, and great shopping. Only 40 miles from Jacksonville, you can find great beaches, a dolphin conservation center, a fort, and great fishing all in St. Augustine.

A few miles south, near Cocoa Beach, you will find every child’s dream, Kennedy Space Center. Cape Canaveral offers beaches and fun, but for both family and single travelers, a visit to the home of NASA is a must! No, they are not still sending astronauts up from their launch pads, but they do great tours, have a lot of history, and anyone can learn a great deal about space and science there. For any vacation to Orlando or Cocoa Beach, be sure to visit, and check their website for tour and launch information. There rocket launches, SpaceX or otherwise, are visible from nearby Daytona and other vacation areas as well.

On the opposite coast, in Tampa, FL, you will find excellent sights at the Tampa Bay and at nearby Ybor City. Ybor City offers night life, great shopping, and wonderful food. This pedestrian shopping zone has plenty for every age, but bring some cash. It is not that expensive, but you will see too much that you want. A short ride from Ybor is the Tampa Bay Port area where you will find a great shopping area next to the cruise port, along with the beautiful Florida Aquarium.

3 Money-Saving Tips on Car Rentals in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Winter is coming and for many commuters and travelers in the UAE, that means negotiating their car rental contracts, now that many are back from the refreshing Eid holiday. From loyalty programs to selecting the best pick-up location, there are a number of ways you can save money on your next rent a car.

Follow these three money-saving tips to get a better deal rent a car abu dhabi

Become a Loyal Customer

If you haven’t been renting a car from a particular dealer long enough and oral promises don’t work, try prepaying an additional sum to show your inclination of becoming a long-term client. Chances are that you could qualify for a loyal customer program. If however you have been renting a car from a company since 6 months or more, you could be in a position to receive discounts or free upgrades.

Zero-down on your Requirements

Determine ahead of time what ‘extras’ you may need and consider the costs so that they fit within your budget. Items to consider:

  • Car Size: Consider the size of the car you are renting. Do you really need that SUV if it’s just you and another partner traveling?
  • Insurance: Contact your travel insurance and credit card company to see if you already have enough coverage. Thirdly, look at available insurance options with the car rental provider. While insurance cover might be essential, you might not need the pricey full insurance option.
  • Mileage limit: Consider the distance you’d be driving every week and opt for a small mileage package if you need to move about short distances in Abu Dhabi. Be sure to check how much you’d be paying for the extra miles should the need arise.

Skip Renting from the Airport or Hotel

Ignore the car rental kiosks at the airport terminal or your hotel. You’ll surely be able to get a much more cost-effective deal if you Google “car rental companies in Abu Dhabi” from the airport or the country you’re traveling from before reaching Abu Dhabi. Try to ease your search, communicate with the car rental dealers directly and have the car delivered straight to you at the airport arrival terminal.

How to Book a Vacation Rental Home

While there is a growing abundance of options when it comes to booking a vacation home, many travelers still find the rental market to be a little chaotic – at least in comparison to more traditional accommodations like hotels/motels. The increasing popularity of vacation rentals as a value-packed alternative to pricier hotels has led to an abundance of options that can be overwhelming.

Here are some tips for booking your vacation rental to ensure that you are getting the most bang for your buck, while protecting yourself from scams or disappointment.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #1: Check out niche listers that focus on specific destinations.

Whether you’ve rented a vacation villa before or not, you’ll want to work with a local company and representatives who know their stuff.

If you’re interested in a Santa Barbara beach house rental, a qualified representative will earn their stripes by walking you through the suitable available properties based on your unique needs and desires. For instance, if you’re bringing your three Bernese mountain dogs, they’ll recommend Santa Barbara beach rental locations that are both dog-friendly and bric-a-brac-free.

Additionally, once you arrive, you’ll want to enjoy concierge services to help you get reservations at that trendy new restaurant, or simply recommend a hike that overlooks the ocean. An anonymous operator three states away won’t be able to deliver that level of local service.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #2: Use a credit card to protect yourself and minimize risks.

You want and expect every detail of your vacation to be perfect. But unfortunately that won’t always be the case. So you need to protect yourself.

Renting with your credit card through a Santa Barbara vacation rental management company offers you that protection. If for some reason the property doesn’t meet your expectations, and the management won’t do anything to fix it, you can keep a record of the problem and dispute the charge with your credit card company.

Property owners who rent person-to-person usually insist on a cashier’s check for 50 percent of the vacation rental to reserve it, and then the other 50 percent in cash upon your arrival. If you later discover roaches scuttling through the kitchen of your vacation home, or other elements of the property that were grossly misrepresented, you will have no leverage because you will have already paid in full in cash.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #3: Get the most bang for your buck.

Dollar for dollar, a vacation rental gives you so much more than a luxury hotel. You get exponentially more space (both indoors and outdoors). You get a host of amenities from private pools to high end kitchens to top flight entertainment systems, all for your exclusive use. Unlike an anonymous hotel room off a crowded corridor, you have a serene home away from home to call your own.

But there are a host of priceless intangible benefits you get when you book your vacation rental through a professional management company. Working with a premier management company to find your ideal vacation home gives you a whole new level of service. A professional company has skin in the game. They are working to establish a good reputation and a list of return clientele, rather than just trying to make fast money.

In the-best-surprise-is-no-surprise category, unlike an absentee owner off Craigslist, a professional Santa Barbara rental company has someone who is troubleshooting issues 24/7, working hard to keep both the renters and the owners happy.

The most underused amenity is the professional staff. Once you arrive at your rental villa in Santa Barbara, they are at your beck and call. Concierge and housekeeping services are a mere button-touch away. The staff’s local Santa Barbara knowledge and connections can turn an average vacation into something amazing. There is no extra cost, and the return is priceless.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #4: Book with confidence.

There’s a HUGE difference between someone who just wants to sell you a room, and a professional vacation rental company that wants to make sure that you enjoy your ultimate Santa Barbara vacation so much that you return again and again. The key to that difference is delivering on what is promised.

Many vacation rental agencies are just big clearing-houses that list properties, sometimes all over the world. They do not usually specialize in a region and offer no other services, aside from rental matchmaking. They can’t make guarantees about the Santa Barbara beach house rental you’ve booked because their representatives have never visited them, inspected them for health and safety concerns, or even met the owners. They cannot vouch for the actual condition of the vacation rental property, the advantages/disadvantages of the location, etc.

Some agencies just want to book the beach rental and collect their fee. They may not care too much about what happens during your stay.

If you’ve never visited the Santa Barbara beach rental house you’re considering, or gotten a firsthand report from a trusted friend, you have no idea whether the photos you’ve seen on the web site are an accurate representation. They might be outdated, retouched or from an entirely different place. (It goes without saying that you should never rent a vacation rental that doesn’t offer photos!) Beware of any site that only offers view or exterior shots. If they’re not willing to show you what the vacation house rental looks like inside, you don’t want to stay there.

With a professional vacation rental company, you can be assured that the quality you see is the quality you will get.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #5: Go with the highest standards of quality.

Professional vacation rental agencies are held to higher standards than private owners. Even if an owner fervently believes that their Santa Barbara vacation rental is clean and up-to-date, their standards might not match your own. One person’s no-visible-dust-bunnies and hi-fi-system are another person’s filthy and anachronistic. A professionally managed Santa Barbara vacation house rental will also be a professionally cleaned and maintained vacation house rental.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #6: Understand the risks of booking through free listing sites like Craigslist.

Listing on a free site is, well, free. No crime in that (who doesn’t love free?), but that might point toward a general laissez-faire attitude the owner has toward his property and tenants.

The owners who are willing to pay a fee to keep their vacation houses booked and in first-class condition have already demonstrated their care and commitment to a working relationship that is beneficial to all parties. The management companies they work with are companies you can rent from worry-free.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #7: Don’t be afraid to negotiate.

The more often these vacation rentals are occupied, the happier the owners are, so if you are planning a last-minute or a long-term stay or if you are a frequent visitor, there is often room to negotiate on the price of your vacation rental. Sometimes the discount might be as much as 30 percent.

Booking a Vacation Rental Tip #8: Do your research and compare rates, amenities, and conditions before entering into a rental agreement.

When you’re trying to narrow down your choice of a Santa Barbara vacation rental, be sure you’re comparing apples to apples. A smaller house on the beach will likely cost more than a larger one in the hills. Know what you’re getting from each property, and from each management company. Follow your gut and go with the company that will cheerfully show up in the middle of the night to snake the sink.

Another benefit to working with a Santa Barbara vacation rental professional management company is that it’s so easy to do a background check on them. Call or visit the Better Business Bureau or a vacation rental site like Has the firm had any reasonable complaints lodged against them? How were they resolved? Type the name of the Santa Barbara vacation rental firm and its owner into Google and you’ll get a wealth of informative opinions.

The increasing popularity of Santa Barbara vacation rentals has led to an abundance of online resources. Your best bet is to do due diligence and compare rates, amenities, reputations, views, and conditions before entering into a rental agreement. It’s your vacation and booking the right accommodations will help you ensure that your holiday will meet and exceed your expectations.

Advantages of investing in a leisure property

Internationally the trend towards owning a leisure property is on the increase, says Ling Dobson, Pam Golding Properties area principal for Knysna and Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route.

“Very often, the usage factor is secondary to the investment aspect and potential for holiday rental income. According to HomeAway, which provides a global on-line vacation rental marketplace, an astonishing 89% of newly purchased holiday homes are being rented out within the first year.

“Today, 23% of buyers intend renting out the property compared to only 7% in 2004. This statistic shows that the growing popularity of vacation rentals is making a big impact on buyers’ investment intentions. We are definitely seeing this international trend manifesting here in South Africa and particularly in Knysna and Plett, where the demand for holiday home rental is high and therefore at a premium.”

Dobson says buyers of holiday homes are seeing this as an opportunity to not only cover their expenses by renting out the property, they also perceive the longer term potential of capital growth of the property – all this while they enjoy several weeks’ or months’ usage during the year and have the option of a retirement home in the future.

Younger buyers

“While a younger generation of home buyers is realising the wealth creation achievable through property ownership, they are also recognising there are a number of benefits in acquiring a vacation home sooner rather than later.

“Consider if you invest in your 40’s or earlier, then by the time you retire you will have a fully paid-for home in a prime location which you know and enjoy, and have probably built up a local network, including friends,” Dobson explains.

“A second home purchase could therefore form part of your retirement planning and depending where it is located, this additional income could provide the means of funding further education for the children, or if you prefer variety, saving towards family vacations in other destinations.

“In addition, as we live in a world of connectivity where entrepreneurs can successfully run a business in Johannesburg from their retreat in Knysna or Plettenberg Bay, we are finding many go for the second house investment, try it out business-wise and relocate thereafter. They may then let out their house in the city, where rentals are always in demand.”

The further, the better

“Buyers of vacation properties are also no longer limited by the distance the property is from their homes. For an increasing number of such buyers, the further away the better, which means they can escape from their daily routines to a revitalising, different environment, and with the use of a property management company, professional concierge service and modern technology the property is easily managed.”

If your holiday home investment is also your future retirement home, it is advisable to consider all related expenses you may encounter. Then either let it out as a long-term rental at first or ensure that the rentals achieved cover levies and rates and taxes, as well as the finance obtained to make this investment.

Says Dobson:”In the popular coastal resorts you will generally find that you can cover a fair percentage of your expenses by renting the property out as a vacation home for as little as 18 weeks a year, which means you have plenty of time to enjoy your home as planned with friends and family.

“Bear in mind that the peak holiday season is the time when vacation rentals are in highest demand and as a result yield the most rewarding rental income. In the high season rates are often double those of mid and low season.”
